Not many games get a 10 from this publication. This review has me plenty excited for a game I was looking at passively over some other titles.

I'm a person who has a tough time writing and scoring reviews of video games (and taking them seriously) because I believe that a consumer shouldn't base his purchase off of an artificial number and opinion, but instead try it themselves. Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy reviews, but not when they're attached to a number. Unfortunately, you don't have many options when it comes to this type of entertainment medium.

I kinda like our review format, despite the score. The score is purely for Metacritic in my opinion, and Metacritic is purely for traffic referrals. I like that we also have a pros/cons section, a section for "if you like THAT game, listen up", and one for "here's why you should care about this aspect of this game". Until every game has a demo, there are always going to be folks that use reviews to determine if something is worthy of a purchase or rental, so at the very least we can provide something better than a story synopsis or a Yahtzee-esque all-or-nothing rant.

Scores are fine for me. That esoteric "no scores needed" approach only works for extreme enthusiasts who spend their time reading every scrap of information about a game anyway.
At this point I have a pretty good feeling on what my favorite reviewers mean when they give it a score. Regular people care about the score. It's a good "at a glance" benchmark.

I agree with Scott, often before a purchase I'll look at an overview on metacritic then select a good review, a review somewhere in the middle, and a bad review and read all three to get a good picture. I do have some reviewers I like and trust, but a point scale is actually taken into consideration with me.

I think I spend too much time on /v/.
And I think I've seen too much of an inflation in game review scores. Remember when a 6 meant it was at least checking out? and 10's were absolute masterworks?

Yeah, 10s still seem to mean something from the major publications. They dont throw those around, but it has gotten to a point that if it is lower then an 8, people think its a piece of crap. A 7 might as well be a 0. I get that, and it is frustrating. Adam Sessler from G4 talks about this all the time, and hates a point score but understands it is necessary to the general audience. He pleads for people to read the reviews, and to stop complaining when a game got a 4 instead of 5.

I agree with Sessler. If people don't read reviews, then it's their own fault.
Granted, it would be nice if we could use the full scale instead of 6-10s only, but here we are.

I don't got time to read reviews. I want reviews read outloud to me so I can absorb them over my morning whiskey. Maybe I'll hire a man servant to read aloud my Destructoid feed... and by "hire" I mean "kidnap a small child" because honestly any amount of money I pay a person is going to be too little. Might as well pay them nothing.
